After September 11

These photographs were taken in New York City shortly after the events of 9-11. The streets of New York were draped with flags, hanging from every flagpole, taped to every storefront, on every lapel. The usual frenetic energy of the city was dulled, on tranquilizers. The pain and sorrow was palpable. We walked about the city like zombies, circling the perimeter of Ground Zero. A skeletal fragment of the twin towers and a heap of rubble was all that remained. Makeshift memorials were everywhere. I returned several more times to photograph, to document, to bear witness.
